The individual in this part-time position is under the general supervision of the Engineering Supervisor and direct supervision of the Project Engineer. The Engineering Intern is required to learn and perform various technical engineering assignments. The goal is to enhance the individual’s knowledge of various Engineering and Construction Inspections tasks. Typical learning skills and tasks may include developing a wide variety of computerized maps, developing construction drawings, reviewing engineering drawings for HCWA and developer projects, preparing detailed cost estimates, performing sanitary sewer basin evaluations, performing field surveys that include construction stakeouts, fire flow tests, performing site inspections, completing daily reports, and troubleshooting various water distribution and wastewater collections system issues. The individual is expected to relate college level course work and knowledge to engineering design and systems operation methods and practices.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND TARGETED SKILLS may include the following and all other duties as assigned:

  • Development of system utility maps. Duties include the utilization of Computer Aided Drafting software (Micro-station & ACAD) and GIS software (ESRI ArcGIS) to maintain an accurate graphic information system of the water distribution and sanitary sewer collection & conveyance systems. Required to perform periodic field surveys utilizing an Electronic Distance Measuring (EDM) device or Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) to verify the location of attributes prior to mapping.
  • Development of water and/or sewerage system construction drawings for use by the Construction or Operations departments. Duties include the importing of existing data from maps, road design files, topography, aerial photography, field surveys to develop base design files.
  • Preparing labor and material cost estimates for engineered projects. Duties include providing estimated costs for the labor and material required to construct water or sanitary sewerage system projects.
  • Assisting with the review of engineered drawings submitted by developers and engineers for proposed development projects. Duties include reviewing design submittals for accuracy, completeness, and conformance with HCWA standards and specifications.
  • Learning various CAD standards. Duties include learning the importance of applicable drawing levels, line weights, symbols, and formats.
  • Preparing property easement plats that are required for proposed locations of facilities outside of road right-of-ways. Duties include researching existing property information, performing boundary surveys, and writing legal descriptions.
  • Performing sanitary sewer basin evaluations. Duties include delineating drainage basins from topography maps and contours, determining various sub-basin acreages within the drainage area.
  • Learning the various issues regarding the sources of water pressure issues, fire flow concerns, and water quality concerns. Duties include scheduling and participating in field activities to verify, monitor, and resolve distribution system hydraulic and water pressure issues. Often required to perform fire flow testing on fire hydrants, analyze data, adjust pressure regulating valves, and provide necessary information for input into the water distribution model.
  • Creating reports, charts, and graphs to illustrate distribution and collections system operations for internal and external use.
  • Understanding the permitting process; including, D.O.T., railroad, EPD, and/or U.S. Army Corps of Engineering permits.


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
: Minimum of one (1) year of successful completion towards a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Pre-Engineering, or very closely related field from an accredited college or university; Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office 2010.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Valid Georgia Driver's License with a clean MVR.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to perform surveying or other field work. This type of work includes, but is not limited to: walking long distances (up to a few miles); carrying equipment up to 40 pounds; clearing thick brush in order to use surveying equipment; walking and/or surveying areas with steep slopes; and carrying equipment through wetland areas.
